Pitches Get Stitches features op-ed pitch reviews from an op-ed editor. Working through examples, I feel, is the best way to teach others how to write opinion pieces. I also just like doing it.

If you’re feeling brave, reach out to me at jake@getopinioned.com with your pitch.

If I select it, I’ll evaluate your pitch in the newsletter. I’ll discuss which elements did or didn’t work, explain why, and offer alternate routes.

I won’t hold back in my critique. It might be harsh, but I promise it will also be useful.

As much I like to give feedback, I also like to receive it. So please send me any thoughts you have about Pitches Get Stitches. I’ll do my best to respond to all messages I receive, just like I did as an editor at Fortune.

Who am I?

My name is Jake Meth. I spent five years building and editing Fortune magazine’s commentary section.

I fielded dozens of pitches a day—and most of them were bad.

I thought that if I could work directly with writers, I could improve the quality and originality of pitches being sent to top publications. So I founded my op-ed consultancy Opinioned, which helps clients publish opinion pieces in top media and teaches people how to write better op-eds.

I got started in journalism after graduating from college, when I moved to Egypt for two years to cover the Arab Spring uprising for a national newspaper. Following that, I relocated to New York and worked in communications for Foreign Affairs magazine and the Council on Foreign Relations.

I received the 2020 New York Press Club award for excellence in journalism in the magazine consumer reporting category for my Fortune investigation into the epidemic of laundry pod poisonings among young children.

I currently live in Jersey City. I love doing and watching improv, eating good food, playing chess, and being a plant dad. I believe there’s nothing better than a slow, aimless walk.

Here’s my LinkedIn.

Who is this for?

Pitches Get Stitches is for people with a strong command of their field and a desire to write publicly—but little knowledge of how to pitch opinion editors. It’s also for those who work for them.

I hope that after reading this newsletter, aspiring op-ed writers will feel more confident pitching opinion editors.
